- Laid out in 1890 by the Missouri Coal and Construction Company. It was most likely named by the founders, H.W. Gayley, George Armstrong, and William Allmond for the Amorites, one of the tribes of Canaan, although the spelling is inconsistent with this explanation. (MO-T101)
