- Atchison County was formerly part of an Indian reservation and one of the six counties within the "Platte Purchase" of 1836. The first settlement in the county was made at Sonora along the Missouri River by Callaway Millsaps and his family in November 1839. The county was first organized on 14 February 1845 from a portion of Holt County. (MO-T109/p42)
