- Located in eastern South Dakota along the boundary with Minnesota, 85 km (53 mi) north of Sioux Falls; County Seat: Brookings.
- Created in 1862 and organized in 1871. Named for Judge Wilmot W Brookings, a native of Maine who came to the area as a pioneer settler in 1857. Judge Brookings served the Dakota Territory in many ways: associate justice of the State Supreme Court, prosecuting attorney for Yankton County, Superintendent in charge of building some of the first roads in eastern South Dakota, and for many years served in the Territorial Legislature.
