- First called Dartmouth and later Lexington, the name of the town was changed to Anamosa, an indian word meaning 'white fawn', for the daughter of a Winnebago chief. The daughter, it is said, fell in love with a young white engineer and chose to end her life by jumping from a high bluff into the Maquoketa River, rather than marry the indian her father had chosen. (IA-T1) Incorporated in 1867.
