- Origin of name appears to have come from the name of the Chapman farm, because of its terrain it was originally called "Le Plateau", which is the french designation for a large, flat area. As time passed the residents of Charles County corrupted the spelling and the pronunciation until it became La Plata with the long a sound used today.
